Prepare a manuscript for journal review

Read the journal’s current author instructions and identify the required structure, citation style and file formats.

Write a short statement of the manuscript’s contribution. Use it to assess whether the introduction and discussion describe the same work.

Bring the contribution forward

Check whether the introduction explains the problem and what the manuscript adds. Remove background that does not help establish that connection.

Compare the abstract, introduction and conclusion for changes in scope or certainty. They should not promise different results.

Inspect the references

Check source records against the publications and follow consequential claims back to the evidence. Confirm editions, authors and dates.

Look for references that remain after their supporting passage has been removed, and for claims that lost their citations during revision.

Align the terminology

Review the main concepts across sections. Define a term where readers need it and use it consistently afterward.

Keep distinctions that affect the method or interpretation. A simpler synonym can be misleading when it removes technical meaning.

Discuss substantive edits

Invite an editor to comment on unclear reasoning or unsupported transitions. Resolve those questions with the authors before final language editing.

Compare suggested changes with the intended claim, including AI revisions. Approval should depend on meaning and evidence.

Check the submission file

Export the manuscript and inspect headings, references and any required sections in the actual file. Confirm the journal’s current submission checklist.

Review permissions, disclosures and authorship requirements outside the writing tool. A well formatted file does not establish compliance with journal policy.
