Your research,
in the tools you use.

Bring your documents and sources into the tools you already use. Connect an assistant, run a command, or give your agent a repeatable workflow.

MCP

Connect your assistant

Bring your saved documents and sources into your assistant. Choose the access it needs.

CLI

Work from your terminal

Find documents and check citations with a command. Use structured results in your scripts.

Skills

Repeat a useful workflow

Give your agent reusable instructions to gather sources, format references, and review drafts.

Choose the tool you use.

Find its connection method, setup steps, and available workflows.

Find my notes on urban gardens in Citation. Read the saved sources,
then list any citations that need attention.

Your workspace.
Your permissions.

  1. Choose your connection

Use an MCP client with OAuth, or create a scoped personal token for your terminal.

  2. Read before you write

Find a document, inspect its sources, and grant editing access only when the work needs it.

  3. Keep changes in context

Saved versions protect concurrent edits. Request IDs help recover a save after an interrupted connection.

Good questions.
Straight answers.

Which connection should I use?

Choose MCP for a compatible assistant, or the CLI for your terminal and scripts. Skills add reusable workflows to either connection in supported agent clients.

What can these tools do?

Search saved documents, create or revise drafts, save source metadata, and format references. Export saved text as TXT or references as BibTeX and RIS. Citation checks inspect saved links and metadata. They do not verify every claim, prove originality, or search the public web.

Do I need to upload my documents again?

No. The tools work with documents and sources already saved in your connected Citation workspace. Find a document, read its contents, and continue from the work you have saved.

Can I choose which workspace to connect?

Yes. Each connection is limited to one approved workspace. Choose the workspace when authorizing a connection or creating a personal token.

Can I allow reading without editing?

Yes. Grant read access to inspect documents and sources. Add editing permissions only when you want the connection to make changes.

Can I use the CLI in scripts?

Yes. Use JSON output to pass results into your scripts. The CLI sends results to standard output and errors to standard error, with a nonzero exit code when a command fails.

Which workflows are available as skills?

Citation includes four skills: gather sources, format references, revise a draft, and review evidence. Choose your host on the skills page for its plugin, upload, or project installation package.

Can I use a local Citation server?

Yes, with a client on the same computer and MCP configured for that local origin. Cloud clients need a reachable HTTPS deployment. The setup guide explains activation and client requirements.

Does a skill give my agent access?

No. Connect Citation separately and approve the permissions you need. A skill supplies instructions, while your connection controls access.

Can I remove access later?

Revoke a connection in Citation settings. Personal tokens also expire, and access stops when the account loses its workspace membership. CLI logout removes its locally saved token.
