Keep a dissertation ready for the next session

A dissertation develops across many sessions and changing questions. Keep the reasoning behind a chapter’s structure and its source choices visible in Citation so that returning to the work does not require reconstructing every decision.

End each session with a short note about the next question or revision. Identify the passage or source you need to revisit.

Keep chapter boundaries tied to the research question rather than treating a growing reading list as an outline.

Leave a useful starting point

Record what a section is trying to establish and what is still unresolved. Include the source or passage that prompted the next question.

Use that note to begin the next session with a specific task, such as comparing definitions or checking an interpretation.

Keep concepts consistent

Review how central terms appear across chapters. Explain a deliberate change in meaning instead of silently adopting a new definition.

Connect definitions to checked sources. Keep disagreements in the literature visible where they affect your own choices.

Prepare for supervision

Share the relevant draft and identify the decisions on which you need feedback. Questions about a specific passage are easier to discuss than a general request to improve a chapter.

Use comments to record the issue and the next revision. Confirm access permissions before sharing research material.

Revise with appropriate caution

Compare proposed wording with the evidence. Preserve limitations and uncertainties that are necessary to the argument.

Treat AI assistance as a proposal to inspect and follow your institution’s policy. A polished paragraph should not conceal an unresolved analytical problem.

Review the project as a whole

Read chapter introductions and conclusions together to check the progression of the dissertation. Look for repeated setup or gaps between arguments.

Inspect exported files against the institution’s requirements and verify references before submission.
