Develop a book chapter with its sources

A nonfiction chapter has to carry a narrative and remain accountable to its evidence. Keep research beside the working prose so that a vivid scene, a factual detail and an interpretation do not lose their different roles.

Give the chapter one central question or movement. Use a short outline to decide what the opening promises the reader.

Keep a research note for each fact that needs checking, including the original source and the location of the supporting passage.

Give the chapter a structure

Draft an outline around the reader’s questions. Identify where a scene introduces a problem and where explanation is needed to understand it.

Move material that answers a different question into another section or chapter. A useful fact does not always belong in the current narrative.

Track details precisely

Add source records and check names, dates and editions against the originals. Keep page references for quotations and specific claims.

Distinguish published evidence from your interpretation. An interview or archival item may also need permissions and attribution beyond a formatted citation.

Protect the narrative voice

Try a revision on a short passage before changing a whole chapter. Compare sentence rhythm and meaning with the original.

Use AI suggestions selectively. Keep the wording that serves the book and reject changes that add unsupported detail or smooth away a necessary uncertainty.

Invite editorial questions

Share the draft with an editor and ask where the narrative becomes difficult to follow. Tie comments to the relevant passage.

Resolve factual questions against the sources before treating a passage as finished. A persuasive paragraph still needs a sound basis.

Prepare the manuscript

Check quotations, citation placement and references in the exported chapter. Review the publisher’s formatting and permissions requirements separately.

Keep the working draft and source notes available for later questions. A revision should remain traceable to the evidence that supports it.
