Install Citation skills

Give your agent reusable instructions for gathering sources, formatting references, revising drafts and reviewing evidence.

Install in ChatGPT

Download the OpenAI plugin ZIP and review its root plugin.json, mcp.json, and four skills. Import the package through custom plugin installation on your supported ChatGPT or Codex surface, or add the extracted package to a personal plugin marketplace. Authorize the Citation MCP connection. Personal installation and public directory publication are separate.

Install in Claude

Upload an individual skill ZIP in Claude’s skill settings, or install the plugin on a surface supporting plugins. Each skill archive preserves its folder and supporting references. Add the Citation custom connector separately when installing only skills.

Install in Gemini

Open Gemini Settings, Skills, and upload one skill ZIP at a time. Use the Gemini downloads below, which contain SKILL.md at the archive root. Requires an eligible personal account, age 18 or older, and Keep Activity enabled. Connect the Citation custom app separately. Skill scripts cannot use network access to replace that connection.

Install in Perplexity

In Perplexity Computer, open Skills and upload each Perplexity skill ZIP separately. Each contains SKILL.md at its root and is below the 10 MB limit. Connect Citation through a custom remote connector for workspace access.

Install in Kimi

Extract the Kimi plugin ZIP. In Kimi Work, open Plugin Builder, import those files, create a Personal marketplace plugin, then install it. The native kimi.plugin.json declares four skills and the Citation MCP server. In Kimi Code, use /plugins install with the local extracted directory or the ZIP URL, then /reload. Kimi web uses skills and MCP in eligible plugin scenarios; it does not use the terminal install commands below.

Install in Codex

Download the shared project bundle and follow the project installation commands below. Install into .agents/skills for Codex or .claude/skills for Claude Code, then refresh skill discovery. Connect Citation MCP or authenticate the CLI separately.

Install in Claude Code

Download the shared project bundle and follow the project installation commands below. Install into .agents/skills for Codex or .claude/skills for Claude Code, then refresh skill discovery. Connect Citation MCP or authenticate the CLI separately.

Connect Citation first

Connect Citation MCP or install and authenticate the CLI. Skills provide instructions, while your connection supplies access. Review the SKILL.md file and supporting references before installing a package.

Install into your project

Run the command from your project with citation-skills-0.1.0.zip in that folder. The archive contains skill folders at its root. The -n option preserves existing files.

Codex
Install into your Codex project
mkdir -p .agents/skills
unzip -n citation-skills-0.1.0.zip -d .agents/skills
Claude Code
Install into your Claude Code project
mkdir -p .claude/skills
unzip -n citation-skills-0.1.0.zip -d .claude/skills

Refresh or restart your client’s skill discovery if the skill does not appear. Local project installation does not install skills into ChatGPT web, Claude web or every other client.

Choose a skill

In Codex, invoke a skill with its $citation name, such as $citation-evidence. In Claude Code, use its /citation name, such as /citation-evidence.

Gather sources

Collect source details, keep their provenance, and save them with your document.

  1. Identify the target document, research question and sources to use. Verify your Citation connection, then read the document and all saved sources.
  2. Gather source details from material you provide or separate research tools available to your agent. Keep unknown authors, dates and page numbers marked as missing.
  3. When you request a saved collection, add each source and read its saved metadata to verify the result. Adding a source does not insert a citation into the draft.
  4. Review the document and source IDs, verified details and remaining gaps returned by the agent.
Gather sources prompt
Use $citation-research to gather the sources I provide into my Citation document. Keep unknown details marked as missing.

Format references

Turn saved sources into a bibliography and inline examples in the style you need.

  1. Choose the document and citation style. If you do not request a style, the skill uses the document’s saved style.
  2. Read the saved sources, format all references and check for missing citation metadata. Preserve exact names, titles and identifiers.
  3. Review the bibliography and inline examples alongside any unresolved fields. Formatting alone does not change your draft.
  4. For a requested bibliography file, export BibTeX or RIS. Changing the document’s style or source metadata requires a separate requested edit.
Format references prompt
Use $citation-format to format the saved references in my Citation document in APA 7. Report any missing details.

Revise a draft

Make a requested edit while preserving formatting, source links, and other people’s changes.

  1. Describe the edit and target document. The skill reads the latest document content, version and relevant sources before making changes.
  2. Prepare the requested revision while preserving headings, formatting and citation links. A request for suggestions alone does not authorize a saved edit.
  3. Save with the current document version and a request ID. If the document changes, read it again and reconcile the edit. After an uncertain response, retry the same input with the same request ID.
  4. Read the saved draft again and check its citations. Review the saved document ID, version, changes and unresolved issues.
Revise a draft prompt
Use $citation-draft to make the edit I describe in my Citation document. Preserve its existing citations and verify the saved result.

Review evidence

Inspect citation links and source details, then explain what the available evidence supports.

  1. Choose the document and the claims or passages to review. The skill reads the document, saved sources and citation check results.
  2. Verify that the checked document version matches the version read. Review missing citation links, incomplete metadata, unused sources and duplicate DOI metadata.
  3. Connect each claim to an accessible source passage. If the original text is unavailable, report the gap. Metadata and snippets alone do not establish support.
  4. Review findings with the passage, source ID, observed issue and proposed next step. This workflow leaves the draft unchanged and does not certify originality or factual accuracy.
Review evidence prompt
Use $citation-evidence to review my Citation document. Report citation issues and evidence gaps without changing the draft.

Use the access your task needs

Use read access for reference formatting or evidence review. Approve document or source writes only for tasks that need them. A skill cannot grant itself permissions or bypass version checks.

Research uses sources you provide or separate authorized tools available to your agent. Citation’s connection does not fetch URLs or search the public web. Evidence review reports citation issues and gaps, not a certification of originality or factual truth.

Keep credentials out of skill files and prompts. With the CLI, verify your connection with citation auth status --json before running a workflow.

Update an installed skill

Extract a new package into a fresh folder and compare it with your installed copy before replacing files. The installation commands preserve existing files, so extracting over an old version can leave a mixture of versions. Refresh skill discovery after updating.
