Choose the workflow for your paper
Zotero is a research reference manager with collections, notes and word processor plugins. Citation offers a document workspace where source records, writing suggestions and passage review stay together.
Start with a representative section of your paper and the sources it needs. Compare the reference work, revision process and actual delivery file before changing the workflow for a complete project.
Keep the library workflow you depend on
Zotero’s collections, notes and reference records support an ongoing research library. Its Word, LibreOffice and Google Docs plugins can update citations and a dynamic bibliography in those editors. Citation also has an optional manually installed Word companion for selected text and reviewed references. It does not import Zotero’s live citation fields.
Choose Citation when you want to develop the document in Citation’s editor with source records and review close to the text. A researcher can use different tools for library work and a particular draft, provided the transfer and ownership of corrections are clear.
Compare the editing environment
Start with the requirements of the manuscript and collaborators. If the group relies on Zotero fields in a shared Word file, preserve that working copy and verify any proposed handoff before changing tools.
In Citation, add checked records, insert connected citations and review a selected passage with the assistant. Comments can keep a question beside the claim it concerns. You still need to assess whether the source supports the wording.
Test a reference transfer before moving a library
Use an eligible RIS or BibTeX export for the references needed by the draft. Review authors, dates, titles, identifiers and source types after import. Do not assume a bibliographic file brings over PDFs, annotations, collections or every plugin field.
Imported records are copies, not a synchronized Zotero library. Open the exported draft in the destination editor and check its references before replacing any manuscript that collaborators depend on.
