Choose the workflow for your paper
Paperpile combines research library tools with citation plugins for Google Docs and Word. Citation offers a writing workspace where source records, connected citations and draft review are developed together.
Start with a representative section of your paper and the sources it needs. Compare the reference work, revision process and actual delivery file before changing the workflow for a complete project.
Compare the actual editor integrations
Paperpile supports citation workflows in both Google Docs and Word. It is not limited to a reference list outside the document. If your team already relies on those plugins, include that requirement in the decision.
Citation’s connected citations work in its own document editor. Choose it when that writing environment, source access and passage review fit the project. Check the exact delivery format before changing a workflow that collaborators already use. Citation’s optional Word companion also supports selected text and reviewed references through a separate manual installation; it does not synchronize the two drafts.
Keep shared evidence distinct from shared wording
A research library helps a team find and organize readings. A shared manuscript also needs decisions about which findings support a claim and how strongly to state it. Use the review process to address those questions explicitly.
In Citation, ask for a focused revision and compare it with the draft and sources. Comments can identify an evidence gap or a disputed interpretation beside the relevant passage. Review changes before applying them to the shared argument.
Transfer records with a clear boundary
Use an eligible BibTeX or RIS export when available and inspect the imported records. Paperpile’s pricing and features distinguish capabilities by plan, so check the source workflow rather than assuming every account has the same export and collaboration setup.
Imported records are copies and do not establish synchronization with Paperpile. Keep PDFs, annotations and the original document until you have tested what transferred. Inspect the final DOCX, PDF or TXT in the workflow the next reader needs.
Keep exploring.
