Choose the workflow for your paper
EndNote’s reference libraries and Cite While You Write support an established document workflow. Citation is useful when you want to develop a draft with its source records, AI suggestions and review inside one writing workspace.
Start with a representative section of your paper and the sources it needs. Compare the reference work, revision process and actual delivery file before changing the workflow for a complete project.
Check what the manuscript depends on
EndNote documents Cite While You Write for Word and ways to use shared reference groups. If a manuscript relies on that workflow, identify those dependencies before changing tools. A reference library and a document’s live fields are related but distinct objects.
Citation provides a different editing environment. You develop the document in Citation, save checked source records and insert connected citations there. Choose based on the requirements of this draft and its collaborators, rather than assuming every library feature has a direct equivalent. Citation’s optional Word companion also supports selected text and reviewed references through a separate manual installation; it does not synchronize the two drafts.
Review the argument alongside its evidence
Use a section of the manuscript to test the writing process. Keep the source and relevant passage behind each claim, then ask for a focused revision or a reviewer’s comment on the specific problem.
Compare proposed wording with the original paper before accepting it. An edited qualifier can change the scientific claim. Citation helps keep that review close to the draft, but the author remains responsible for interpreting the evidence.
Make a representative transfer before a full handoff
Prepare a small eligible RIS or BibTeX reference file and check whether its fields fit Citation’s import. Inspect a journal article, a book chapter and any other source type the manuscript uses. Add missing records manually when needed.
Keep the original EndNote library and manuscript. Do not assume a reference import preserves attachments, group organization, record relationships or Word field codes. Open the exported document in the destination workflow before deciding which copy becomes authoritative.
Keep exploring.
