Citation is building a workspace for people who turn research into something worth reading. We bring sources, notes, drafts and references together so a writer can follow an idea from the material that inspired it to the document they share. Our work serves the everyday decisions behind a paper, an article, a report or a longer research project.

We care about the connections between those decisions. Finding a source is only useful when its details can be reviewed. An AI suggestion needs to fit the writer’s intention and remain theirs to accept or reject. A finished document should carry its references with it. We want the product to make those steps easier to understand while leaving room for the judgment that good writing requires.

As a startup, we value people who can follow a problem across disciplines and stay close to the person using the result. A clear explanation, a dependable interaction and a thoughtful technical decision all contribute to the same experience. Joining Citation means helping shape both the product and the way we build it, with care for the details and a willingness to learn from the work.

The opportunity

We are looking for a Growth Marketer who can connect a real writing need with a clear reason to try Citation. Our product brings research, sources and drafts together, but that value needs to be understood in the context of someone’s work. A student preparing a first paper, an editor checking a manuscript and a researcher organizing evidence arrive with different questions. You will help us reach those people with useful, accurate communication.

The role covers the path from discovery to meaningful use. That can involve search, editorial distribution, product education, partnerships and experiments that improve how a person begins. We want someone who can write well, examine the evidence behind a result and work closely with product contributors when the next growth opportunity depends on a clearer experience rather than another campaign.

Citation’s public voice should reflect the care inside the product. We want growth work that makes a specific promise and helps the person reach it. You will shape messages, test channels and develop a repeatable understanding of where useful demand comes from, while keeping the relationship between acquisition, activation and continued use visible.

What you’ll work on

  • Develop audience and message hypotheses grounded in actual writing and research tasks. Explain who an initiative is for, what problem it addresses and which part of Citation’s current experience supports the promise being made.
  • Plan focused acquisition experiments across relevant channels, including search, content distribution, communities and partnerships. Define the expected learning, practical scope and measurement approach before expanding the effort.
  • Improve the journey from a landing page or useful article to a completed product task. Work with design and product on the clarity of the next step, and investigate where expectations and the actual experience diverge.
  • Write and refine product messaging, campaign material and educational content with a consistent voice. Use concrete examples and accurate descriptions of the product, and work with editorial contributors when a claim requires deeper source review.
  • Measure channel performance through meaningful behavior as well as reach. Keep attribution limitations and audience differences visible, and examine whether people who arrive through a channel can find value and return to useful work.
  • Build a sustainable distribution process for strong content and product improvements. Identify where a guide, integration or workflow is relevant, tailor the explanation to that audience and preserve a useful record of what the effort taught us.
  • Share findings in a form that improves the next decision. Explain the result, the uncertainty and the implications for product or communication, then choose whether to continue, revise or stop an initiative.

What you’ll bring

  • You have helped a product, service or editorial project reach an audience and can explain the connection between the channel, message and result. We care about the decisions you made and how you interpreted the evidence.
  • You can write clearly for different audiences without losing the substance of the product. You can turn a broad benefit into a specific explanation that a reader can evaluate against their own task.
  • You are comfortable with acquisition and product analytics, including the limits of attribution. You distinguish a visit, a signup, a completed task and continued use instead of treating them as interchangeable outcomes.
  • You can design a small experiment with a useful question, a realistic scope and a clear next decision. You know how to learn from a mixed or inconclusive result without overstating what it proves.
  • You work well with design, product, engineering and editorial contributors. You can identify when the growth problem requires a change to the experience and describe that need with enough evidence to support a discussion.
  • You bring practical organization to creative work. You can manage a channel or initiative, preserve useful context and follow through on the details that make a message accurate and a result interpretable.

Useful, but not required

  • Experience with software products, education, research communities or productivity tools would help you understand the intent behind a search or recommendation in Citation’s space.
  • Experience with search strategy, lifecycle communication, partnership development or product education would be useful, especially where useful content and product adoption reinforce each other.
  • Comfort building simple landing page experiments, analyzing cohorts or collaborating on instrumentation would help you move between a creative hypothesis and evidence about its effect.

Your first few months

  • Learn Citation by completing the main writing workflows and reviewing the current discovery paths. Identify a small number of audience needs, examine the existing messages and agree on a focused opportunity where the product can deliver a clear benefit.
  • Run one bounded initiative from message and distribution through measurement. Work with the relevant contributors on the experience after arrival, document the assumptions and follow the results far enough to understand more than the initial traffic.
  • Use the findings to develop a repeatable approach for a promising audience or channel. Improve the measurement and content process where needed, and propose the next investment with a clear account of what has been learned and what remains uncertain.

Who you’ll work with

You will work with product and design on the path to value, with editorial on useful explanations and with data contributors on measurement. The strongest growth ideas should become better when those perspectives meet.

Bring specific evidence into discussions about priorities. If a page attracts interest but few people complete the intended task, help investigate whether the message, audience, next step or product behavior explains the gap. Keep the conversation focused on improving the whole journey.

What good work looks like

  • The people we reach can understand what Citation offers and find a useful next step that matches the reason they arrived.
  • Growth decisions connect acquisition with activation and continued use, with clear definitions and an honest account of uncertainty in the evidence.
  • Messages and distribution become more effective through learning, while remaining accurate, helpful and consistent with Citation’s product experience.

How we work

We start with a concrete user problem and choose a focused piece of work that can make it better. Important decisions should be understandable in writing, with the relevant context, tradeoffs and open questions available to the people contributing. We share unfinished work when feedback can still change the outcome and protect enough time to think, investigate and build.

Ownership includes asking for help, explaining a constraint and following through after the first version is delivered. We expect people to care about the whole experience and to challenge an assumption with evidence and consideration for the person who made it. Clear communication and dependable follow through matter more than how visible someone can make their activity.

Each working arrangement is discussed individually. We clarify responsibilities, location, availability, compensation and the practical support needed for the role before agreeing to start. You do not need to match every optional experience listed here. Show us the work you can do, the judgment behind it and the areas you are ready to learn.

Our working principles

Getting to know each other

  1. 1. Introduce yourself

Tell us which area interests you, how you prefer to work and where we can see a relevant example. Include your location, time zone and availability.

  2. 2. Discuss the fit

We review the introduction against the work we need to do. When there is a relevant opportunity, we arrange a conversation about your experience and the problem.

  3. 3. Explore the work

Walk through a project and explain your decisions. If a practical exercise would help, agree on its scope and expectations before it starts.

  4. 4. Agree on the details

Clarify responsibilities, working arrangement, compensation and start date together. An introduction does not require you to share confidential work or customer data.

Apply for this role

Share one growth initiative in detail. Explain the audience, the problem, your hypothesis, the message and the result, including the definitions behind any metrics. Tell us what you changed or stopped after reviewing the evidence. Include a campaign, article, landing page or concise written walkthrough that shows your own contribution.
