# Add sources Find a reference, review its details, and connect it to your document. ## Walkthrough 1. **Open Cite.** Open the document you want to reference and choose Cite beside it. 2. **Choose Add manually.** Open the Add source menu and choose Add manually. 3. **Review source details.** Choose the source type and check the title, authors, date, and publication details. 4. **Add to sources.** Save the reference to this document. You can return to its editor to correct it. 5. **Cite the source.** Place your cursor in the draft and choose Cite beside the saved source. ## Find a source 1. Open your document and choose Cite. 2. Enter a title, URL, DOI, or ISBN to look for a source. 3. Review the result before adding it to the document. Check the title, authors, date, and publication details. A matching title is a starting point. Confirm that the result is the exact edition or publication you used. ## Add a source manually 1. Open the Add source menu in Cite and choose Add manually. 2. Choose the appropriate source type and enter the available details. 3. Choose Add to sources. To correct an existing source, open its editor and choose Save changes. Leave genuinely unknown details empty rather than inventing them. Citation checks can help you find fields that still need review. ## Use a PDF source The PDF source upload can read available text and look for citation metadata. Review the resulting details before using the reference. > OCR is not available. If a scanned PDF has no readable text, enter its title or DOI, or add the details manually. Uploading a file to your library does not by itself insert a citation. ## Cite the source Once the source is saved, place your cursor in the document and choose Cite beside that source. Adding a reference and inserting its citation are separate actions. - [Insert citations](/docs/inserting-citations) - [Import references from another app](/docs/integrations)
